As part of onboarding new operations supervisors, our client wanted to add decision making simulations to classroom training that would mimic the real life experience working with scheduling systems and decisions driven by triggering events.
Currently instructors were logging onto the live system and searching for examples they could use in class. Also, while learners were able to practice in a "sandbox" version of the system, they had to work on different operating activities, which limited the ability of the instructor to provide coaching and feedback to the class as a whole.
We designed and built a detailed model of the actual system user interface in Storyline, with customized functionality provided using Javascript and augmented by video from Camtasia and scripted communications via Audiate. System displays showing current status and Gantt Chart based scheduling were simulated and animated in real-time and results tracked via the LMS.
Implementing this simulation allowed attendees to practice procedures and decision making individually, and instructors to focus on coaching and feedback. The class now experienced a common set of scenarios during the exercise. Instructors were able to discuss specific decisions along with alternatives drawing on their personal experience with the class based on the exercise.
